While roofing tasks like repair and maintenance are best left to the pros, there are a few things that you as the homeowner can do that would be beneficial to your roof and even extend its service life. In today’s post, your local roofing company Tango & Gatti shares a look at these tasks.
Keep an Eye Out for Roof Leaks
Leaks are not problems in themselves, but are symptoms of bigger roofing problems — which is why you should never ignore signs that indicate a roofing leak, such as water stains on the walls and ceilings. The sooner roof repairs are done, the less repair work will be needed, and the lower the corresponding repair costs will be. Other signs that you should keep an eye out for include clumping insulation in the attic, mold growth, and bubbling or blistering paint on the walls and ceilings.
Inspect Your Roof Regularly
Visual inspections are different from the scheduled roofing maintenance conducted by your roofing contractor every three to five years. Inspecting the roof should be done at least once a year. You will, however, need to call your roofing contractor in case you find problems like damaged or missing shingles and flashing. Having such problems fixed as soon as possible can help keep repair costs low, and may even prevent an unplanned roof replacement.
To inspect your roof, take a pair of binoculars and a notebook or your smartphone for recording your findings. Train the binoculars on the roof and inspect every inch of the roofing plane, the gutters and the flashing, from as many sides as possible. If you have a remote-controlled drone with a camera, you can fly it over your roof, record video and show it to your roofer later if you find problems.
Know Whom To Call in Case of Roofing Emergencies
It’s a good practice to have a local roofer’s phone number on your contacts list. In case of a roofing emergency, you know whom to call first. This is particularly important during or after a storm, because you may need emergency roofing and assistance with filing an insurance claim.
