A good roofing warranty should include two types of coverage: material and workmanship.
Material warranty — Material warranty is also referred to as factory or manufacturer warranty. It covers roofing problems caused by manufacturing defects such as blistering — caused by moisture trapped in the asphalt layer during manufacture — or prematurely “balding” shingles. It’s important to note that some manufacturers will only cover material replacement and exclude teardown, installation and disposal costs.

It is usually shorter than material warranties as installation errors usually become apparent within the first two or three years. Some roofing manufacturers offer workmanship coverage as part of their comprehensive system warranties while some roofing contractors offer guarantees.
A typical asphalt shingle roof lasts about 20 to 30 years. A good roofing warranty coverage should cover about the same period. It’s important to keep in mind that such warranty periods are honored after certain conditions, such as making sure the roof receives regular maintenance. Another important thing to remember when reviewing your warranty coverage is that the term “lifetime” refers to the roof’s life span, not the homeowner’s or the house’s.
