Built-up roofing, or BUR, has been in use in the U.S. for more than 100 years now but it remains to be one of the most trusted choices for roof replacement in commercial properties. Made of alternating layers of bitumen and reinforcing fabrics topped with gravel or other surfacing options, it is also commonly known as “tar and gravel” roofing.
The Basics
BUR layers are called plies. A BUR roofing system then with four plies has a four-layer construction. Typically as well, BURs are considered fully adhered when installed directly over insulation or roof decking. Surfacing often used for the roofing system can include aggregate, mineral-surfaced or fiberglass cap sheets or elastomeric coatings.
Advantages
- Durability – Because it is constructed with multiple layers and topped with surfacing, BUR is highly durable, able to withstand harsh weather conditions throughout the year. Surfacing also imparts some level of fire-resistance to the roofing system.
- Easy to Maintain – BUR boasts ultra-violet protection and excellent waterproofing capabilities, allowing it to last up to 30 years even with minimal upkeep. Should cracks or blisters develop, they are also easy to repair. Routine maintenance from a trusted roofing company is still, of course, ideal, but BUR also doesn’t require specialized care to remain functional.
- Energy-Efficient – BUR is great at preventing passive heating by limiting heat transfer between a building’s exterior and interior surfaces. This makes it easy to maintain ideal indoor conditions.
