Loose Gutters: Watch Out for These Signs
Loose gutters spell trouble if you don’t have them resecured as soon as possible. In today’s post, local gutter and roofing company Tango & Gatti discusses how to recognize signs of loose gutters and what causes them.
Signs of Loose Gutters
Knowing the signs of loose gutters can help prevent bigger problems such as gutter sections falling off, or rainwater spilling onto areas near the house foundation and causing structural damage. Also, early repairs generally require less labor and materials, and would not be as inconvenient. The following are some of the most common signs of loose gutters.
- Visibly Loose Gutter Troughs. This is the most obvious sign, and one that should prompt you to take action as soon as possible. Seamless gutters are less likely to develop leaks as they come loose compared to traditionally built ones.
- Water Dripping Behind the Gutters. Pay attention to the roof’s fascia, the part where the gutters are attached, during routine gutter and roofing inspections. Either you’ll find water dripping in that area or you’ll see signs of water stains or peeling paint on the fascia and soffit. In some cases, the water may reach the siding.
- Protruding Gutter Fasteners. Gutter hangers are held in place by long fasteners, which can be nails or screws. They’re easily noticeable from the ground if they come loose and are clear indicators that you need to call for gutter repairs.
What Causes Loose Gutters
- Poor Drainage. When gutters are filled to capacity, the combined weight can exert enough force to pull the gutters down. Regularly cleaning your gutters can help reduce the risk of leaves and debris clogging the gutters and causing drainage issues.
- Installation Errors. If you need only one reason why you should work with professional gutter installers, it’s that improper installation methods can lead to problems like loose gutters. Not taking into account factors like hanger spacing, fastener depth and matching gutter size to the roof slope can lead to early gutter failure.
